James Wood Chapter - WV State Society Daughters of the American Revolution

JAMES WOOD CHAPTER

Parkersburg, West Virginia

West Virginia State Society Daughters of the American Revolution

WELCOME!

The James Wood Chapter, NSDAR, was organized on December 23,1902 and was awarded National Affiliation on January 21, 1903.  The Organizing Regent was Mrs. Baldwin Day Spillman (Ann Camden), who also served as the first Chapter Regent.

The Chapter was named for James Wood, Jr., who was born in Winchester, Virginia  in 1747, and served as a private and finally a captain in Pontiac?s War.  As a captain in Lord Dunmore's expedition he saw the shores along the Ohio River of the land which was to bear his name, Wood County.  He was commissioned a Colonel of the 12th Virginia Regiment of the Continental Establishment, was commended for conspicuous gallantry at Brandywine, was probably at the battles of Germantown and Monmouth, and survived the bleak winter at Valley Forge.

In 1783 Colonel Wood was commissioned as Brigadier General in command of the State Troops of Virginia, in which capacity he was vigilant in guarding the frontier settlements from Indian attack.  Becoming a member of the State Executive Council, Lieutenant Governor, and finally Governor of Virginia in 1796, he proved to be a sufficient and capable executive.  He remained a member of the Executive Council until his death in 1813.

The Chapter has always been an influence for God, Home, and Country in the Wood County area and has provided patriotic education, philanthropy, and stability by means of its many projects for the community, state, and nation.

James Woods officers and members are seen here presenting a check to the Wood County Historical Society in support of purchasing an authentic reproduction cannon for Fort Boreman Hill Park in Parkersburg.
