JAMES WOOD CHAPTER, DAR

HISTORY

The James Wood Chapter, NSDAR, was organized on December 23,1902 and was awarded National Affiliation on January 21, 1903.  The Organizing Regent was Mrs. Baldwin Day Spillman (Ann Camden), who also served as the first Chapter Regent.

The Chapter was named for James Wood, Jr., who was born in Winchester, Virginia  in 1747, and served as a private and finally a captain in Pontiac’s War.  As a captain in Lord Dunmore’s expedition he saw the shores along the Ohio River of the land which was to bear his name…Wood County.  He was commissioned a Colonel of the 12th Virginia Regiment of the Continental Establishment, was commended for conspicuous gallantry at Brandywine, was probably at the battles of Germantown and Monmouth, and survived the bleak winter at Valley Forge.

In 1783 Colonel Wood was commissioned as Brigadier General in command of the State Troops of Virginia, in which capacity he was vigilant in guarding the frontier settlements from Indian attack.  Becoming a member of the State Executive Council, Lieutenant Governor, and finally Governor of Virginia in 1796, he proved to be a sufficient and capable executive.  He remained a member of the Executive Council until his death in 1813.

The James Wood Chapter tries very hard to make contributions to the local community through its volunteerism and financial support.  We have been blessed through the gift of Bessie O. Stewart in “trust for the use and benefit of the James Wood Chapter, Daughters of the American Revolution.  This legacy is to be considered as a memorial to Ellen Scott Stewart by her daughters Myrt MacLane Stewart, Virginia Stewart Gordon, Bessie O. Stewart, Doris Stewart, and Emily Stewart Logan.  Through these funds we have been able to establish an academic scholarship for area high school seniors, donate funds to many causes including Fort Boreman Park, Maddox Cemetery, Vienna Public Library, Wood County Library, Wood County Schools and many more.

We celebrated our one hundredth birthday in 2003 with a gala held at the Smoot Theatre followed by a free concert for the community by one of the musical groups from the United States Army. We also published our history for members and donated copies to local libraries.

The Chapter has always been an influence for God, Home, and Country in the Wood County area and has provided patriotic education, philanthropy, and stability by means of its many projects for the community, state, and nation.
